How To Prep Your Skin For Makeup

Learn how to prep your skin before applying makeup

You look in the mirror about to begin your makeup routine. You’re confident these steps will make you look and feel gorgeous today. Then you spend your precious time applying your makeup, only to discover that it doesn’t go on so well as you had hoped for.

You think to yourself - “Hey, my makeup needs to go on smooth. It needs to blend out well on pores that are diminished, with my skin properly moisturized and dewy, so that my makeup does not cling to dry spots or settle into fine lines and wrinkles.”

What you've realized is that prepping your skin first is an important precursor to achieving a flawless, makeup application. And with these 3 basic steps that we’ve put together just for you, you can prepare your skin so that it is smooth, luminous and hydrated just before you start your makeup routine.

Step 1:  Gentle Exfoliation

Gently exfoliate 2-3 times a week to get rid of dead skin cells that build up on the surface and end up closing pores, causing dullness and uneven skin tone.

Exfoliating will help smooth and brighten your skin, giving your makeup an even base to grip onto.

To learn more about exfoliating the proper way, here's a guide on everything you need to know about exfoliation.

Step 2: Brighten Up Your Skin

Applying a toner and serum can be combined to create a glowing makeup base. Toners will help provide that initial layer of hydration, restore the pH balance in your skin and help it absorb moisturizer.

Serums can minimize pores to control oil production while adding a second layer of hydration for your skin.

Step 3: Remember to Hydrate

Applying a beauty oil or a mask that acts like a moisturizer will help your foundation and concealer go on more seamlessly, as well as provide longevity to your makeup, and a bit of natural radiance under your foundation.

Either skincare product will also nourish and hydrate your skin to keep it supple and primed.

Pro Tip

Add a couple of drops of beauty oil to your foundation.
