Sometimes bad skincare habits can creep in even if we know our skincare routines. Here are 5 common mistakes that you may not be aware of that you should avoid. ✨
Not Cleansing Well Enough
Clean skin is healthy skin, which is why you want to make sure you are spending the appropriate amount of time on your cleansing routine, usually between 1-2 minutes.
Work in your cleanser and get into every nook and cranny to get those pores clean. Double-cleanse if you're wearing makeup or sunscreen.
Not Using Toner Properly
Back in the day, toners used to be what I call "fluffy" products that did little more than dampen the skin to allow for better product penetration. They were also used to remove left over residue from your cleanser.
Todays toners contain active ingredients and are designed to treat the skin. Before you go to apply your toner, your skin should be perfectly clean and prepped with no residue or makeup left behind.
Contaminating Your Serums
We've all seen our favorite Instagram influencers apply products by touching the pipette dropper directly to the skin and I'd be lying if I said I hadn't tried this myself to conserve precious products.
Please don't do this!
Dropper applicators are not meant to touch the skin. Once bacteria gets in, your product will become contaminated and its shelf-life will be shortened. So please use your hands to apply your serums instead.
Applying Moisturizer to Dry Skin
Applying moisturizer to dry skin is like putting oil on a dry sponge. Your skin will not reap the full benefits of the wonderful ingredients and humectants which are meant to trap water in the skin.
Before applying your moisturizer, make sure that your skin is slightly damp and prepped with other products such as a serum or toner. You will notice an immediate difference on how your products perform and how your skin looks if you follow this rule.
Not Using Enough Sunscreen/Mixing Sunscreen With Moisturizer
Sunscreen has to go through rigorous testing and FDA approval to make sure that it will provide the level of protection that's stated on the package.
Mixing your sunscreen will change its physical properties and will not provide adequate protection against UVA and UVB light.
Not using enough sunscreen will also not provide adequate protection. Make sure you are using enough. A good rule of thumb is to use 2 finger lengths for the face and neck.
