How Can I Get Rid of Blackheads and Clogged Pores?

Skin Devotee Scoop Ask An Esthetician Series Blackheads and Breakouts Masking

Why do I get blackheads and can I ever truly get rid of them?

Blackheads are caused by a buildup of oil and dead skin cells that get trapped inside the follicles. This accumulation of sebum and dead skin eventually hardens causing a tiny plug inside the pore that turns dark due to oxidation.

Typically oily t-zone areas and certain skin types are more prone to clogged pores and blackheads, and even if you're taking really good care of your skin, you may notice that they never really seem to go away, or that they keep coming back.

So how do you get rid of clogged pores and blackheads for good?>

The bad news is that you may never be able to permanently get rid of clogged pores and blackheads.

This is especially true for those who have oilier skin or t-zones. The good news is that you can lessen the degree at which they form or even prevent them entirely with a proper skincare routine and regular facials.

What would happen if I left them untreated?

If left untreated, or if the skin continues to build up over time, bacteria gets to join the party, leading to acne. The excess buildup of oil can also cause pores to expand over time.

To help combat this, we recommend masking at least two or three times a week with a clay-based mask to help exfoliate, pull out excess oil and prevent breakouts before they start.

You also want to be using products in your daily routine and ingredients that include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid or mandelic acid, sulfur and/or retinol to help stimulate cellular turnover and keep pores from getting blocked.

What skincare products help combat clogged pores and breakouts?

Here are some of our best skincare products to try:

Use it daily if you're oily or a few times a week if you're combination/normal. The gentle lactic acid along with peppermint and tea tree oil helps to exfoliate and decongest the pores, as it kills the acne-causing bacteria. You'll be addicted to the minty fresh tingle!

Banish blackheads and breakouts with a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, tea tree oil and antioxidants in this refreshing toner that exfoliates, balances and prepares the skin for treatment products.

A combination of alpha and beta-hydroxy acids is coupled with a low-dose of retinol making this serum a game-changer and a personal favorite for congested skin and gentle resurfacing.

Another personal favorite, this creamy clay-based mask contains activated charcoal and diatom algae, which act like a magnet, helping to pull out impurities and excess oil.

This sulfur-based creamy clay mask is great for those areas that need a little more attention. Use it on trouble zones or as an overnight spot treatment to help treat breakouts and kill bacteria.

Not just for lifting, the ZIIP's Total Clearing program is the best and most effective way to zap bacteria and stubborn breakouts under the skin and help promote healing.
