Why do I get blackheads and can I ever truly get rid of them?
Blackheads are caused by a buildup of oil and dead skin cells that get trapped inside the follicles. This accumulation of sebum and dead skin eventually hardens causing a tiny plug inside the pore that turns dark due to oxidation.
Typically oily t-zone areas and certain skin types are more prone to clogged pores and blackheads, and even if you're taking really good care of your skin, you may notice that they never really seem to go away, or that they keep coming back.
So how do you get rid of clogged pores and blackheads for good?
The bad news is that you may never be able to permanently get rid of clogged pores and blackheads.
This is especially true for those who have oilier skin or t-zones. The good news is that you can lessen the degree at which they form or even prevent them entirely with a proper skincare routine and regular facials.
What would happen if I left them untreated?
If left untreated, or if the skin continues to build up over time, bacteria gets to join the party, leading to acne. The excess buildup of oil can also cause pores to expand over time.
To help combat this, we recommend masking at least two or three times a week with a clay-based mask to help exfoliate, pull out excess oil and prevent breakouts before they start.
You also want to be using products in your daily routine and ingredients that include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid or mandelic acid, sulfur and/or retinol to help stimulate cellular turnover and keep pores from getting blocked.
